To construct and to change environments for visual rather than purely practical reason is as human as it is to form an emotive or aesthetic reaction to the visual impulses offered by the surroundings. The notions of landscape and cityscape are among the most subtle constructions of the human mind and continue to hold a strong fascination across cultural boundaries. An exhibition co-curated by Alicja Dobrucka and Thomas Frangenberg traces some of the diverse paths followed by contemporary artists working in Britain in picturing, making present, the visual environment as lived experience.
