Damage, Italy, 2017

Commission for Fondazione Fotografia, Modena

It was difficult to imagine the earthquake . It is nonetheless somehow a photographers curse to be called upon to photograph the aftermath. It is a photographic tradition.

Everywhere we happened to go was just empty abandoned
Many places didn't look like there had ever been an earthquake, they were just deserted unsettling and eery.

Sometimes one would encounter one of the local people attending to their chickens.
One of the villages where we stopped we found a man who lost his house. He was there with three dogs.

What struck me the most was the amount of stray dogs. I wondered where they came from and why they were all forgotten. Did people leave them there when they left? Were they just farm dogs that somehow lost their way when the earth trembled?
Why has nobody looked for them? Why are they still wondering around looking lost but somehow owning the places they now inhabit?

We happened to be in a town – one of the more damaged areas which we managed to access. I was being interviewed by Teresa and this amazingly beautiful white dog came along. He was wagging his tale looking kind of friendly and uninterested in us. His long
red tongue was sticking out.

He seemed friendly but didn't want to engage. He wouldn’t let me stroke him.
As soon as I had finished the interview I had noticed that my packet of cigarettes was gone. I jokingly said: ‘The dog must have taken it.’

One of the video crew had told me that one of his cables was stolen and it was the dog!
I couldn't quite believe that.

One of the boys went looking for the dog to find its ‘storage place’. We were all sure the dog had its home and a place where he stored what he accumulated.

It was his space after all. He was the only one left in the village and he was in control.

Life is on a New High, Mumbai 2013-15

Live in the lap of nature. Experience the richness of life at every step. Wake up to rustling leaves and chirping birds every morning. Breathe easy. Live in cinemascope. Upgrade to the elite. That’s what we call life!

There can’t be a better day to buy a home. There cant be a better home to buy on this occasion. Special offer on higher floors. Spectacular waterscape views on a 70% lush green plot. Hill view. The best of both worlds.

Ask yourself, how much envy can you endure?

Neither wealth nor influence will bring them back again. Grab this opportunity and live a ‘life fulfilled’.. Wake up every day to a spectacular view of the blue sky romancing the sea. Come home to beach side joys.
Life is on a new high.[1]

The project aims to address the issue of the changing landscape and unregulated construction in the financial capital of India, Mumbai. The city is undergoing a massive construction boom, with more than 15 supertalls, hundreds of skyscrapers and thousands of high-rise buildings under construction. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) defines a ‘supertall’ as a building over 300 m (980 ft) high. Currently Mumbai is home to the largest number of supertalls and skyscrapers under construction in the world.

More than 2500 high-rise buildings are already constructed, in addition to more than a thousand mid-rises. Most of the skyscrapers are residential. Even the richest man in the city lives in a skyscraper. ‘Antilia’ is one of the taller towers in which 27 floors accommodate a family of four and 200 servants.
The population density is estimated to be about 20,482 persons per square kilometre. The living space is 4.5 square metres per person. The number of slum-dwellers is estimated to be 9 million - that is, 62% of all Mumbaikers live in desolate slums.

There is no centralized urban planning and the towers keep rising in all areas of central Mumbai, in particular on the huge pieces of land that accommodated textile factories that are now closed, as well as in the suburbs. The building companies are supported by the government and are given tax exemption.
This building boom creates a great deal of problems; it makes the city difficult to negotiate on foot and it is damaging to the environment.

Almost all of these towers, imposing by size and inappropriateness in equal measure, are residential. The architecture of the newly builds is unimaginative, conformist and yet aspirational, as the affluent inhabitants model themselves on partly mistaken perceptions of international displays of wealth. What is clearly intended to be an emulation of a western lifestyle has no close equivalent in the West.

The portraits of the towers from the outside are in dialogue with the scrutiny of found advertising imagery of similarly aspirational interiors, which unmask most peculiar ways of homemaking. In the interiors that people create for themselves personal taste is replaced with cultural references of such density that they become difficult even to look at, let alone to inhabit.

Advertising agencies appeal to the newly rich, the up and coming middle class, using slogans such as: ’You don’t just invite friends over, you invite awe.’ The new Indian luxury consumer is pursuing a lifestyle where owning an apartment in the 'newly builds', as much as possessing exclusive items, is seen as a clear sign of wealth and power.

PVC Architecture, Berlin 2014

During my time in Berlin, a city constantly reinventing itself, at the residency at ZKU I have been investigating the urban landscape, in particular temporary structures, be they ruins or buildings under constructions – small pieces of history in suspension. This urban landscape is temporary but somehow appears permanent; some of the buildings have been veiled for more than 10 years.

I have been thinking about architecture and memory inspired by the absence of architecture, the city in transition, wondering about the permanence of things. In this series of works I’m trying to preserve a bit of that ephemeral state.

The white or colorful screens of PVC material that are meant to look like real structures transform the city into a canvas, a backdrop for something to happen, a theatre stage for the passers-by and the accompanying street sounds.

The buildings lose their scale in relation to the surrounding objects, or the other way round, the real becomes somehow enhanced when viewed in contexts defined by the prevalent white PVC sheets that cover scaffolding, as if developers were especially creating these white gaps in the urban landscape to provide photographers with backdrops.

I’m fascinated by the interplay of the real and the artificial. The developers’ intervention in the architecture creates the unintentional result that the temporary veiling stands in for and replaces the architectural structure.

I wonder what would happen if the whole city was covered in white.
Houses (31°23′30.67″N 35°6′44.45″E), Palestine, 2012-15

The series is a documentation of a Palestinian village called Susya. It was established in the 1830s, and a religious communal Israeli settlement under the jurisdiction of Har Hebron Regional Council was established in 1983.

The Palestinian community has a population of 250 residents as of 2013. The Israeli settlement, on 1,800 dunams of land, had a population of 737 in 2006.

Susya, whether it refers to the site of the synagogue or the ruins of the large ancient settlement of some 60 dunams (1 dunam =1000 m2), is not mentioned in any ancient text, and Jewish literature failed to register an ancient Jewish town on that site.

Susya, as my guide told me, is the village famous for its resistance as it encourages all other villages in the area to stay in place.

Here architecture appears as a symbol of resistance in the occupied Palestinian territories, disrupted by the constant construction of new settlements in spite of the fact that in the Palestinian territories land is already too scarce to live on comfortably.

The houses (which there aren’t many of) are sturdy as they are made of bricks or concrete. However, they are made to look like temporary structures or tents in order to appear ephemeral and in flux.

The land of the Palestinians ends where the house ends. It is dangerous for them to go out into the fields into the proximity of thesettlers. Children are frequently attacked on their way to school when passing near Israeli settlements. The environments of Palestinian houses are no-go areas, are non-spaces.

Palestine has been continuously recorded from the very beginning of photography. In 1849, Maxime du Camp was one of the first to make a systematic photographic survey of monuments, ruins and landscapes in the middle east, including Palestine. Today the political question of the territory and how it is represented is more acute than ever, and photography brings a crucial contribution to an awareness of what it is to inhabit a contested and damaged landscape.

When the painter Delacroix visited North Africa in 1832, he saw Greek and Roman Antiquity in the folds and drapery of the people's garments. He was seeing the classical past of art history in the present.

To take pictures of these houses in Susya is akin to taking a portrait. The houses of Susya are covered with tarpaulin so that they are concealed from view. And the tarpaulins resemble drapery. These contemporary folds have a new currency: they have migrated from classical art to the present day of these Palestinians dwellings. Acting as camouflage in a zone of conflict, this contemporary form of drapery acquires now an unexpected political and subversive meaning.

Concrete Mushrooms, Albania, 2011

Commission for the Experimenta EXD'11 Architectural Biennale in Lisbon curated by Joseph Grima.

Dr. Thomas Frangenberg

To an extent not easily imagined Albania, the countryside and beaches no less than cities, is littered with mushroom-shaped bunkers of which in excess of 750.000 were built between 1967 and 1986. During the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha a paranoid fear prevailed that saw attacks from all sides, from Yugoslavia, Nato and the Warsaw Pact countries as likely. Not having served their intended function during Hoxha's lifetime, the bunkers' destruction is now actively encouraged.

In her project 'Concrete Mushrooms' Alicja Dobrucka attempts to trace, and to document, many of these structures. All obsolete in terms of their original purpose, some have been given new functions. Others have been polychromed, some in a uniform colour such as blue, others in more inventive designs; one was given something like a Santa's hat by read and white paint. Many have enirely gone, but some survive in the form of mounds of rubble or of larger fragments, the playthings of wind or water. Nature has usurped large numbers of them. Some sink into the water, trees may grow out of them, others appear in the midst of young forests.

Dobrucka is particularly interested in human interaction with these structures that does not involve their destruction. Walls are built over them, lovers flirt on them and meet within, families assemble around them on the beach, boys use them as lookout points and elevated places to dive from.

Dobrucka's photographs also dwell on the bunkers' purely visual interest. Their rounded tops contrast with the angularity of adjacent structures built later, particularly pointedly in an image showing rectilinear concrete and metal structures, forming grids and casting a grid of shadows, beyond which one of the bunkers appears strikingly alien. Dobjucka' series of photographs document a richly diverse palette of ways of dealing with this problematic historical inheritance, ranging from denial, forgetting or demolition to engaging attempts to take them as given, but to humanize them as locations of human interaction or as visual spectacle.
I like you, I like you a lot, Poland, 2008 - 2016

I like you, I like you a lot is a personal work, about family and the experience of death and mourning. It responds to the tragic loss of the artist’s 13-year-old brother Maks, who drowned while on a scout’s trip in May 2008 in Poland.

Initially the work is documentary in character and reveals the sequence of events in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. What is shown are the intimate familial moments of bereavement while enduring the standard procedures for an accidental death, i.e. the scrutiny of the place of death, the morgue, the funeral, and the recovery of personal items during the period of immediate shock and grief. During this period the camera became a protecting shield from the brutal reality in a helpless situation.

The artist’s approach changed as time elapsed. The resultant work evolved to become more open ended and reflective on the experience of loss.
It became a search for presence in absence, creating affect rather than a narrative – for example, by engaging with mysteriously disturbing and seductive night landscapes. The artist also focused on the traces of the disappearing presence of her brother – cropped objects photographed in the studio: scratches on a helmet which when cropped is reminiscent of the moon, t-shirt with an inscription ‘Fuck Communism’ as well as his machete.

The artist investigated the places Maks loved, led by the remaining boys of his group. To photograph the boys continuing in the activities they would have once enjoyed together means to imagine the life he could still be living.

Makse’s friends were scouts like him. Their passion was ASGs (Air Shot Guns) – an especially prominent craze among both adults and young people in Poland.
Maks and his friends were inspired by the ideal of the 'hero' soldier propagated through American cinema. Movies such as Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July and Full Metal Jacket are infamous examples of this genre, the heroes/anti-heroes of which the boys admired and modeled themselves after. The deceased brother and his closest friends formed a small group: dressing in the uniforms of American soldiers they would play in the mountains and forest around the town.

Communism officially ended in 1990 when Poland opened its borders to a flood of Western products, arts, ideas and ideals. My brother and his friends are the first generation to grow up under that changing culture and it is fascinating to me to see how they were and are already so enthralled to the archetypes of Westernized – and especially Americanized – ideals. The influence of American Westernized culture is all- pervasive and it seems to me that wherever it gains an entry it is but a matter of time before it dominates. In this respect, to document the loss of my brother through the continuing lives of his friends is also to document a certain loss of Polish identity.
